04/28/2008: We released a little application to navigate the corpus through the the set of typed dependencies computed for this work: Semantic Dependencies Browser. Thanks to Wes Workman for his contributions to the implementation.
Abstract:
Access to scientific literature remains a search-and-sift paradigm wherein keyword searches often return a vast number of ranked documents. These documents have to be sifted through, one at a time, in order to manually glean the actionable information from them. In order to affect a switch from this search-and-sift view, in this paper, we utilize semantic metadata (entities and named relationships) to transform the sifting process into a relationship-centric semantic navigation of literature databases. We describe the construction and use of a Semantic Browser that supports such navigation through scientific literature. Recording navigation paths (entity-relationship chains) as Semantic Trails, our application provides one implementation of Dr. Vannevar Bush.s idea of trial blazing. We also describe the use of our browser as a mechanism for evaluating information extraction from scientific literature.
